We’ve heard it all. It doesn’t matter what it is, people will always think that they need to get in better shape before they commit to things that will prove or dis-prove what kind of shape they are actually in. It’s one of the most common “put-off’s” I hear as a high level fitness trainer and I’m sure it’ll be an objection that I’ll deal with for as long as I work with people needing/wanting to get in better shape.
What does it mean to be “in shape”? The answer you get depends on who you ask but from my perspective, and that of many others in my profession, it’s about performance. A lot of people have it in their mind that being in shape means to just look a certain way. “Skinny people are in shape, fat people are out of shape”…WRONG. Some of the skinniest people I know couldn’t run a 100m without needing to take a break and I know men over 300lbs and women over 250lbs that compete in triathlons and can run half marathons without stopping. I’m sure there are those out there that can do fulls, ultras, and maybe even Ironman’s. These people are the ones that I will point to when someone gives me the excuse that they need to be in better shape before doing anything that will challenge them.
At Ternion Athletics we challenge people every day. Regardless of the current fitness level of the individual that walks in the door, we customize our program daily to FIT every single one of them. When you look at our workouts, if you’re not experienced in the gym or have been out of the game for a while, you may certainly think, “I can’t do any of that. This isn’t for me”, and rule yourself out. That’s the WRONG thing to do. Remember the old saying, “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”? Don’t judge yourself against that workout that you see posted on our website or the super “in-shape” people you see posted all over our social media pages. Remember, it’s marketing. We are trying to attract everyone; from the person who is 150 pounds heavier than what they should be, up to the highest level athlete that is looking to shave a few minutes off of their personal best Ironman. We want YOU and everyone that looks like you, performs at the same level as you, performs worse than you, or way better. No matter what, if your goal is to get in better shape, we can get you there.
Why choose Ternion Athletics over a traditional gym or another boutique facility like ours?
1.) We treat everyone the same. We offer plans that allow someone to come 2 times, 3 times, or 5 times per week (Monday-Friday). We offer 2 specialty classes on Saturday that anyone with a 2x, 3x, or 5x plan can come to at no additional cost. So, if you are the type that likes to work out/train 6 days per week, you have the option at our facility. Regardless of what plan you have OR what level of athleticism you currently exhibit, we are going to give you just as much help as we give the next person. Actually, those that are just getting started get the most attention in the beginning because of the amount of skill that needs to be learned in the early stages. With functional training it is critical that we understand the movement patterns, are cognizant of current ability to perform the movements, and are made aware of what limitations we have that need to be addressed before we can perform them better. We are your teachers. You pay us not only to use our facility and our equipment but, for the time we’ve put into research and programming workouts that will get you in the best shape of your life. Your level of commitment will determine how fast you get there but we GUARANTEE that you will get there at some point.
2.) You are not alone. Walk into a big traditional gym and what happens? If it’s not your 1st day and you’ve already been given “the tour”, you walk in, scan your card, hang up your keys, grab a towel, and you’re on your own. “Hmm, what do I do?” The first thing you probably do is go climb on an open treadmill, stationary bike, or stair climber. That’s safe. It’s hard to look like a fool just walking, peddling, or climbing up stairs that, ultimately, take you nowhere. Maybe after a few minutes on one of these machines you decide to go to the circuit area that give you “a total body workout on 12 machines and in less than 30 minutes”. You walk up to the 1st machine, stare at the pictures and admire the colored muscles. You’ve heard from a friend that high repetitions at low weight is what you need to do to burn fat so you crank out 2 sets of 30 on the first machine and move onto the next. 25 minutes later, you’re out the door.
First of all, doing this type of exercise is WAY BETTER than doing nothing. We are not putting down those that choose to workout in this way. If you are doing ANYTHING to improve your health & fitness, you are a rock star in our book. Especially in Southeast Texas where the sedentary lifestyle and second hand smoke place us in the top 5 most unhealthy and unhappy places in the country. The point is, you are left to figure out everything on your own and you have no one there to tell you if you’re doing something right or wrong. You could pay a personal trainer to measure your body fat, tell you how much you “should weigh” and how many reps and sets you should do on each machine, but you’re going to pay $50-$100 per hour for this type of service. Sadly, the trainer is probably only getting 40% of this money. The gym is getting the rest.
When you come to Ternion Athletics, you are paying for small group training lead by a professional movement coach. You are not alone unless you decide you want personal training and to have the gym all to yourself. We offer this option as well for those that can afford it, but we feel that working alongside others with a common goal is the best way to get in amazing shape FAST. You are motivated by everyone around you who are working hard and struggling to get better. When you are tired and you want to quit, you don’t because you see the person next to you (that’s in worse shape than you) still moving. This pushes you to keep going and ultimately, will drive you to accomplishing things you never thought you could do. You avoid plateaus because we record every lift and every conditioning workout that you do. We monitor your progress and adjust the intensity level to make sure that we are forcing your body to adapt. We help you avoid succumbing to the law of accommodation. We do it all for you. You don’t even need to look up what the law of accommodation is. We know what it is and we know how to keep it from stalling your progress.
3.) We train everyone like an athlete. You may have never played on a sports team or have played any type of sport in your life, period. You may not think you are an “athlete”. WRONG. You are. You may not be competing for a position on the US Olympic team but you are an athlete. You may only currently be able to exhibit 20% of your athleticism due to the lack of practice but, being an athlete involves developing skill for your sport. We train people to compete in “the sport of fitness”. In doing so, we shape and mold bodies by teaching them to perform better than they did the training session before. We teach the fundamentals of performance nutrition, develop accuracy, agility, balance, coordination, cardio-respiratory endurance, flexibility, power, speed, strength, and stamina. We train the mind to be tough and to tolerate physical discomfort. We help you develop consistency. Provide you with constant feedback and support to allow you to progress at the highest rate possible.
